The shingles virus Varicella-Zoster is the same virus responsible for chickenpox. If you had chickenpox as a child, after you recovered, the virus lies dormant in your nerve cells. It can reawaken as painful shingles rash when your immune system is compromised or weakens with age. A 2016 study found that rates of shingles have been climbing since the mid-1940s. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this flu season is fierce and Kristen Nordlund, a spokeswoman for the CDC stated, “Based on the latest data, the flu season has not even peaked yet.” Numerous medical authorities say any given year when flu vaccines are well matched to circulating viruses, their effectiveness is at best, about 60 percent in healthy individuals.
