The Centers for Disease Control estimates more than 300,000 infections will occur this year in the United States. Lyme disease patients are typically prescribed tetracycline antibiotics, however approximately 10-20% of them later develop symptoms of fatigue, pain in their muscles, joints or nerves, and cognitive impairment which can continue for years after their initial infection. Studies suggest that this may because of drug-tolerant ‘persisters,’ a group of bacterial cells that survive the initial dose of antibiotics.
