CBD Oil is what everyone is talking about!
However, there is a lot of confusing information out there. After researching for several weeks these are some of the facts about CBD oil I have found.
CBD (Cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating component of the cannabis plant. Cannabis is an umbrella term that includes two different varieties of plants "cousins" called marijuana and hemp. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the major component of marijuana which gives people the psychoactive high feeling.
The hemp plant is significantly lacking in THC and to be classified as hemp, a cannabis plant must contain less than 0.3% THC by volume. Which is why you can’t experience any high, mind-altering effects.
CBD oil is sometimes confused with hemp seed oil which is cold-pressed seeds of industrial hemp to create a nutty-like oil, but it only contains small traces of CBD. Typically, it’s used for cooking, skin-care products and bio-fuels. There is also Cannabis oil which is usually made from marijuana and contains a high THC percentage and must be medicinally prescribed. It also must be purchased from a dispensary in an area where marijuana is legal.
CBD is most well-known for its anti-inflammatory and chronic pain-relieving benefits.
The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response. It is literally a bridge between body and mind. Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system and play an important part in regulating inflammation. They act like someone stepping on the brakes when inflammation begins. Your ECS regulates how quickly neurotransmitters are being released, slowing them down or speeding them up as necessary to return to and maintain balance. CBD does not bind directly to receptors in the endocannabinoid system. It stimulates receptors, causing a reaction and stops the breakdown of our own endocannabinoids, allowing our bodies to use more of what it’s already naturally producing.
According to a study published in the June 2012 Journal of Experimental Medicine, researchers found that CBD significantly reduced chronic inflammation and pain in mice and rats. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed, using an animal model, CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. CBD oil has been so effective it has been approved in Canada for multiple sclerosis and cancer pain.
Researchers believe that CBD’s ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain signaling systems may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders. In fact, one of the most studied uses for CBD is in treating neurological disorders like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. In one study published in the May 2017 New England Journal of Medicine, CBD decreased the frequency of childhood Dravet syndrome seizures by 23 percentage points more than those taking a placebo. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived pharmaceutical “Epidiolex” which contains CBD for seizure conditions.
Dr. Robert Carson, an assistant professor of neurology and pediatrics at Vanderbilt University who focuses on children with epilepsy stated, "In children, especially those with autism spectrum disorders, this may manifest as improved interactions with others.” Other preliminary research shows CBD holds promise for conditions including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, psychosis and Parkinson's disease. Initial research published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease found that CBD was able to prevent the development of social recognition deficit in participants. Which could help people in the early stages of Alzheimer's potentially retain their ability to recognize the faces of people that they know.
CBD is commonly used for anxiety, and insomnia. Many studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep. CBD has also been shown to reduce levels of stress and anxiety in those suffering from conditions such as PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. CBD even reduced the stress and discomfort surrounding public speaking.

Although numerous more medical studies are needed to determine the effects of CBD for a variety of health concerns, a World Health Organization report in February 2018 has found no adverse health outcomes or abuse potential from CBD use, but rather several beneficial medical applications.
