Jane’s Blog Alert! Americans with Dementia to Double by 2040

Posted by Jane Jansen on

A new Milken Institute report "Reducing the Cost and Risk of Dementia: Recommendations to Improve Brain Health and Decrease Disparities", shows nearly 13 million Americans will have dementia by 2040 – almost twice as many as today.

Nora Super, lead author of the report and senior director of the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging, states, “Our risk of developing dementia doubles every five years after we turn 65; by age 85, nearly one in three of us will have the disease. Emerging evidence shows that despite family history and personal genetics, lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and better sleep can improve health at all ages."

According to Dementia Care Central, “When a person has Alzheimer’s disease or another related dementia, there are noted changes that occur within the brain. These changes are both structural and chemical, and they impact one another to reinforce the damage to the brain.” As the disease progresses, many changes will impair the person’s ability to function, including speech, memory, reasoning and potentially mood/personality.

Protein clusters, known as “plaques,” gather between nerve cells, and twisted strands of protein, known as “tangles,” gather inside nerve cells. (Beta-amyloid plaques gather between the nerve cells and the protein that forms inside nerve cells is called tau tangles which begin causing damage to the brain and nerve cells.

The level of inflammation in an Alzheimer’s brain is excessive, counter-productive and causes increased tangles and cell death. When the neurons, (think of as electrical wiring) which carry signals to the brain, are destroyed, signals transmitted between brain cells are disrupted and connections between nerve cells of the brain become interrupted (somewhat like short circuiting the system).

As the neuron’s function is reduced, less of the neurotransmitters are produced and communication between neurons is decreased. Tau tangles found inside the neurons and also block cells from receiving needed nutrients. Eventually, brain cells die due to the damage caused by beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles. The greater the inflammation, the greater the negative impact.

I highly recommend these 3 key supplements for the prevention and slowing the progression of Dementia / Alzheimer’s Disease:

  1. Reg’Active Essential ME-3 – Enhances Glutathione production and activator
  2. PlusCBD Oil- Beneficial for Neuron protection and inflammation
  3. Kyolic AGED Garlic Extract- Improves circulation, plaque removal and inflammation

1. GLUTATHIONE

Published in the January 16, 2018 issue Journal of Neuroinflammation: In disease states, a reduction in brain glutathione occurs with aging, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. This provides a biological explanation for our observations of the association between glutathione and cognition.

Oxidative stress (OS) occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body's ability to counteract their damaging effects through neutralization with antioxidants. Oxidative damage is the harm sustained by cells and tissues that are unable to keep up with free radical production. has been implicated in both cardiovascular pathophysiology and in neurodegeneration, impaired organ function, and development of disease.

Glutathione (GSH) is often referred to as the body's master antioxidant. A primary function of glutathione is to alleviate this oxidative stress. GSH is a tripeptide that functions as an essential antioxidant and protects neurons against free radical damage in the brain (Ross et al., 2012). Glutathione is also released from astrocytes (star-shaped glial cells in the brain and spinal cord) and can be imported from blood into the brain through the blood-brain barrier.

The level of glutathione in your body can drop with age. It can be affected by a poor diet, a lack of exercise, chronic diseases like diabetes and sleep apnea, a weaker immune system, infection, stress, and more. Previous studies have shown a reduction in brain glutathione following traumatic brain injury which may enhance the susceptibility of neurons to damage by free radicals. (Ansari et al. 2008)

Reg’Active Essential ME-3 contains the highest level of the unique glutathione-boosting probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3. In 1995, award-winning microbiologist Marika Mikelsaar, MD, PhD and her team of research scientists at the University of Tartu, Estonia isolated this distinctive probiotic strain. ME-3 is considered by scientists as a "complete glutathione system" due to its ability to produce glutathione in the human body via three different mechanisms. Twenty years of research has proven ME-3 to produce and maintain healthy glutathione levels, thus providing powerful antioxidant support and healthy aging at the very cellular level. Reg´Activ® was named for the 'Active Regeneration' of glutathione that is stimulated by ME-3.

Why not just take glutathione? As a supplement glutathione has been proven ineffective. One study gave healthy people 500 milligrams twice a day for a month, however due to the digestive process they were unable to raise the glutathione level in the blood.

Essential ME-3 releases glutathione directly into the intestines, bypassing the normal digestive breakdown and ensuring the availability of more glutathione to the body. ME-3 is considered by scientists as a "complete glutathione system" due to its ability to produce glutathione in the human body via three different mechanisms. 2. CBD OIL (Cannabidiol)

CBD is an antioxidant which can work to improve health outcomes for persons with dementia: by reducing inflammation, by reducing oxygen buildup, and by working as a brain stimulant and neuroprotectant. Recent studies show CBD reduces or removes the impact of inflammation, oxygen buildup and brain cell decline.

CBD is a non-intoxicating component of the cannabis plant. Cannabis is an umbrella term that includes two different varieties of plants "cousins" called marijuana and hemp. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the major component of marijuana which gives people the psychoactive high feeling. The hemp plant is significantly lacking in THC and to be classified as hemp, a cannabis plant must contain less than 0.3% THC by volume. Which is why you can’t experience any high, mind-altering effects.

A 2011 study by Australian researchers found that CBD promotes the growth and development of brain cells, which were shown to reduce the decline of memory and other brain functions. Studies suggest CBD has the potential to reverse and even prevent the development of Alzheimer’s negative impact.

A study published in the 2014 journal Alzheimer’s Disease on long term Cannabidiol (CBD) use was shown to reverse cognitive deficits of Alzheimer’s Disease transgenic mice and to exert neuroprotective, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro and in vivo.

A study published in the June 2015 Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics titled Cannabinoids late-onset Alzheimer’s Disease reports, “Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that cannabinoids can reduce oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and the formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.”

The US Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve a CBD drug for the purposes of treating dementia, however it has approved a CBD-based drug for treating neurological dysfunction in patients with epilepsy.

I use Plus CBD Oil products for my patients and personally because of their high quality and information transparency. PlusCBD Oil has full spectrum traceability From Seed to Shelf™ products. After harvesting, their hemp is transferred to a European ISO-certified facility, where it undergoes CO2 extraction. CO2 extraction is widely considered the safest and most efficient extraction method for CBD, indicating a standard of quality for the company. After extraction, every batch of all products are tested in an in-house lab for quality assurance, safety, and potency. Then, the products are sent to a third-party lab (DB Labs) for a further quality check, to assess the cannabinoid profile and confirm there are no potential pesticides, residual solvents, heavy metals, or other toxins in the products.

All the third-party lab results are made readily available to consumers on the PlusCBD Oil website. All PlusCBD Oil products are non-GMO, gluten-free, and U.S. Hemp Authority certified—indicating that their hemp production meets FDA Current Good Manufacturing Practices and Good Agricultural Practices. 3.AGED GARLIC EXTRACT

A study published in Phytotherapy Research, 2009 discussed the anti-amyloid activity of garlic, “It was seen that not only could the compound prevent amyloid aggregation, but it could also defibrilize previously formed fibrils.”

A study published in the January 2017 journal, NUTRIENTS, shows Aged Garlic Extract is protective of brain neurons by reducing neuro-inflammation. A study published in Current Medicinal Chemistry found that S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC), an active compound in AGE, can prevent the neuroinflammation that leads to the death of synapses. Keeping synapses healthy is essential to preventing memory loss and cognitive decline. Moreover, treatment with AGE or S-allyl cysteine has been shown to prevent the degeneration of the brain’s frontal lobe, improve learning and memory retention and extend lifespan.

“Over 350 scientific studies have shown that Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) is safe and effective in providing health benefits in humans. Its neuroprotective effect has also been evaluated in an animal model. AGE has the potential to protect the brain against neurodegenerative conditions by preventing brain injury following ischemia, protecting neuronal cells against apoptosis, and preventing Beta-amyloid-induced oxidative death.

Wakunaga of America-Kyolic is the only manufacturer of Aged Garlic Extract and have a wide variety of formulas including:

Kyolic® Brain Memory is a proprietary, triple-extract herbal blend containing a combination of Aged Garlic Extract, Ginseng Extract and Ginkgo Biloba Extract to support healthy brain function and memory.

The unique aging process applied in manufacturing Aged Garlic Extract distinguishes Kyolic from other garlic products available on the market. For more information go to Kyolic.com

Treating Alzheimer’s disease continues to be challenging for the medical community. However, the more medical studies focus on understanding the development of this terrible disease, the closer to effective preventative measures and treatments will become available. In the meantime, we should all strive to protect brain function by implementing healthier lifestyles, daily exercise, limiting unhealthy foods, eliminating neurotoxins, and focus on giving the brain proper nourishment.
