Heart Disease What You Can Do

Posted by Jane Jansen on

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women!

According to American Heart Association’s 2016 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update:

One of every three deaths in the United States is from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

About 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, an average of 1 death every 40 seconds. About 92.1 million American adults are living with some form of cardiovascular disease or the after-effects of stroke.  Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives each year than all forms of cancer and Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease combined.

Heart disease is preventable, even when heart disease runs in your family. Sadly though most people don’t think it will ever happen to them until they are being carted off to the emergency room by an ambulance. Also most people think if they have their cholesterol in a normal range they are safe. Not really.

According to a 2004 report by the American Heart Association you suffer a debilitating or fatal heart attack with “normal” cholesterol and it happens every day—1,152 times a day nationwide. So whether your cholesterol is normal or not you still need to take preventive measures!

Clean Up Your Diet

Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet (which includes healthy fats) reduces the risk of heart disease for many people. In fact, an analysis of more than 1.5 million healthy adults demonstrated that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease and cancer, as well as a reduced incidence of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. In particular reduce sugars, white flour products, processed foods and dairy.

Keep up with your regular exercise

Over the past 4 decades, dozens of studies have shown that exercise is good for your heart. But here's the catch, according to a recent survey: You're only as strong as your last workout. Doctors from the Framingham Heart Study in Massachusetts compared people who'd only recently started exercising with those who used to exercise regularly but stopped. Their finding: The cardiovascular mortality rate was 40 percent lower among the current exercisers.

"The benefits of exercise wear off quickly," says Scott Sherman, MD, of the UCLA School of Medicine. Fortunately, the benefits of exercise also show up quickly.

Don't Smoke

Heart disease risks increases roughly 100 percent for each pack of cigarettes you smoke per day. From the moment smoke reaches your lungs, your heart is forced to work harder. Your pulse quickens, forcing your heart to beat an extra 10 to 25 times per minute, as many as 36,000 additional times per day. Smoking constricts the blood vessels, decreasing oxygen to your heart muscle and other organs. Your blood pressure increases by 10 to 15 percent, putting additional stress on your heart and blood vessels, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Supplements:

There are numerous supplements that can be helpful in preventing heart disease.

There are two formulas we have used in our practice very successfully.

REG'ACTIV (Essential Formulas) is a revolutionary breakthrough Glutathione activator specially formulated with the ME-3 bacteria Lactobacillus fermentum which is proven to stimulate glutathione production naturally in the human body, as well as act as a glutathione-activating agent

Glutathione is a substance found in every cell in the body, where it acts as an antioxidant to neutralize free radicals and prevent cellular damage. Glutathione’s value as a nutritional supplement derives from its role in the synthesis of proteins in the body. These proteins perform many functions relating to the synthesis and repair of tissue. It is particularly important for maintaining the immune system.

Research published March 25 2009 in the medical journal PLoS ONE concluded, “This study provides evidence that systemic glutathione deficiency is related to the functional status and structural cardiac abnormalities of patients with cardiac diseases.”

In a study of 636 patients with suspected coronary artery disease published in the 2003 New England Journal of Medicine researchers found that those with low glutathione levels were 30 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those with healthy levels of the antioxidant.

Unfortunately taking glutathione as a supplement has been shown to be ineffective. One study gave healthy people 500 milligrams twice a day for a month, however due to the digestive process they were unable to raise the glutathione level in the blood.

In 1995, award-winning microbiologist Marika Mikelsaar, MD, PhD and her team of research scientists at the University of Tartu, Estonia isolated this distinctive probiotic strain. ME-3 is considered by scientists as a "complete glutathione system" due to its ability to produce glutathione in the human body via three different mechanisms.

REG'ACTIV Formulation includes three exclusive formulas containing ME-3 as well as condition-specific ingredients for synergistic health-promoting benefits.

  1. REG’ACTIV CARDIO WELLNESS™
  2. REG’ACTIV DETOX & LIVER HEALTH™
  3. REG’ACTIV IMMUNE & VITALITY™.

KYOLIC AGED GARLIC EXTRACT (Wakunaga):  Numerous research studies have shown the many benefits of Aged Garlic Extract. Research presented at the 2012 American College of Cardiology’s symposium found the combination of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) and coenzyme Q10 significantly reduced several key risk factors that contribute to sudden cardiac death in firefighters.

The year-long double blind study involved 65 firefighters with established cardiovascular disease. Each of the participants was evaluated prior to treatment and again after one year using Cardiac CT scan, a 3-D imaging technique that measures plaque buildup in the arteries. Inflammatory and oxidative stress markers were also determined.

The firefighters were divided into two treatment groups: the first group was given four capsules of Kyolic CoQ10 and the remaining firefighters received four placebo capsules.

After 12 months, researchers found the Kyolic CoQ10 group had significant four fold reductions in the progression of coronary artery calcification, and a seven-fold reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers that contribute to cardiovascular disease.

The Kyolic 109 Blood Pressure formula also contains nattokinase which is a potent fibrinolytic (anti-clotting) enzyme complex extracted and highly purified from a traditional Japanese food called Natto. It directly breaks the bonds of the fibrin protein components.

When chronic inflammation or injury damages a blood vessel wall, platelets are activated and change shape from round to spiny, stick to the broken vessel wall and each other, and begin to plug the break. They also interact with other blood proteins to form fibrin. Fibrin strands form a net that entraps more platelets and blood cells, producing a clot that plugs the break. Although most blood clots naturally dissolve on their own without complications, there are two situations in which they can be dangerous if they are not reabsorbed by the body.

  1. A clot can form in an artery which could block the flow of blood and cut off oxygen supply. This can trigger a heart attack or stroke.
  2. A piece of the blood clot could form in one of the heart's chambers (as with A-Fib) and then travel through the bloodstream, lodging in either an organ or an artery and cutting off the blood supply from that point, causing an embolism.

Researchers from Biotechnology Research Laboratories and JCR Pharmaceuticals Co. of Kobe, Japan, tested Nattokinase's ability to dissolve a blood clot in the carotid arteries of rats. Animals treated with Nattokinase regained 62 percent of blood flow, whereas those treated with plasmin regained just 15.8 percent of blood flow.

We have been utilizing the REG'Active formulas and Kyolic Garlic formulas for patients looking to prevent, as well as those with cardiovascular disease in our practice with excellent results.
