Feeling Tired After Being Sick

Posted by Jane Jansen on

This winter I had a cold for 3 or 4 days. Then I seemed to experience chronic congestion and fatigue for about another month. The congestion from hell finally went away, but feeling chronically tired, which is not like me at all, lingered on. No matter how much sleep or rest I got, I felt like I was slogging through the day. My brain felt like the battery needed recharging.

I kept thinking my immune system was depleted and a viral infection was somehow hanging on. However, after taking numerous different supplements for an infection (viral & bacterial) made absolutely no difference and after 2 weeks of dragging around and feeling awful, I finally figured out that my adrenal glands were shot.

Considering it is a topic I often address with my patients, you would think adrenal fatigue would have jumped to the forefront of my mind! Once I figured it out and started taking an adrenal formula and B vitamins within 2 days I felt my energy was noticeably better! After a week or so I felt totally back to normal! I am now waking up feeling refreshed, ready to go and at full battery power again.

The adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys. They are important as they release a variety of hormones that help maintain biological balance. They are generally known at the energy & stress glands. Any stress (physical or emotional) you experience, the harder your adrenals work to protect you, the more cortisol production increases. Over time, high levels of cortisol deplete the adrenal glands and predispose you to chronic fatigue and you feel like your get up and go, got up and went. High levels of cortisol also suppress production of serotonin so you feel more depressed and elevate prolactin levels, increasing the body’s sensitivity to pain throughout the body.

Many people who are chronically tired try to increase energy by drinking caffeinated beverages like coffee or Red Bull. The problem is over time excessive caffeine beats the adrenals to increase energy and further and drains them like a battery. Soon you have very little battery power left. Think of it like a horse pulling a heavy cart up a steep hill, you can pull out and whip and beat the horse to go faster, but eventually the horse is going to become exhausted and can potentially collapse. It is far better to give the horse nutrients to become stronger, thereby increasing its energy and fortitude for the long haul.

Recharging Your Adrenals & Getting Energy Naturally:

  1. Tone down your caffeine intake.
  2. Next try taking a vitamin B-50 complex in the morning before breakfast, after all the B vitamins are known as the stress vitamins.
  3. Start taking an adrenal formula will help revitalize you. For women AdrenaSense (Natural Factors) or Herbal Adrenergize (Enzymatic Therapy) are great. For men Adrenergize (Enzymatic Therapy) or Adrenal Cytotrophin (Enzyme Process) work very well.
  4. Vitamin B12 1000 mcg (sublingual/ under tongue) morning and afternoon is wonderful for brain energy without feeling wired.

If you have been sick or under emotional stress particularly for a long time and you are so tired your wagon is dragging it’s time for a change. Take it from me; helping your adrenal glands out will get you feeling like your old self again! I know, it did for me!
