Chronic Yeast Infections & Antibiotic Use

Posted by Jane Jansen on

Yeast is a normal part of your digestion and lives throughout your body and particularly thrives in the digestive tract and mucus membrane tissues. However when yeast overgrows it becomes a chronic irritant to those tissues and also become fungal and is the underlying basis for many serious health problems.

They include thrush in the mouth and gums, esophagitis, acid reflux, bronchial infections, sinus infections, intestinal infections, IBS, skin and scalp infections causing itching, rashes and hair loss, toe nail fungus, jock itch, diaper rash, bed sores, vaginal yeast infections, chronic fatigue and even potentially cancer. Because doctors don’t seem to understand how yeast infections can be an underlying contributor to other health issues, yeast overgrowth largely gets ignored (unless it is flagrant) and their patients suffer as a result.

One reason it is ignored could be your immune system generally keeps yeast under control. There are many causes of yeast over growth, but antibiotic use is the most prevalent reason yeast infections start running rampant in most people.

Doctors generally prescribe antibiotics to patients to kill bacterial infections; the problem is they also kill good bacteria that help to keep the body’s natural yeast population in check. Then all too often antibiotics are prescribed for viral infections (for which they don’t work) or to as a preventative, when no bacterial infection is actually present.

Any antibiotic can upset the good bacteria-yeast balance in the body, but there are other medications and medical treatments that can as well including birth control pills, steroids, asthma inhalers, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Several studies have shown condoms with the lubricant-spermicide nonoxynol-9 promote yeast infections in both men and women.

But by and large the over prescribing of antibiotics is creating chronic yeast-fungal infections for many people, including children, and potentially setting up serious health issues later on.

The best way to avoid yeast infections is to avoid antibiotics in the first place. There are numerous natural antibiotics that don’t upset the intestinal flora (good bacteria) and therefore don’t cause yeast infections.

If antibiotic use is absolutely unavoidable make sure to take a good probiotic (good bacteria) to replace what was killed off and re-establish the balance after finishing the antibiotic. If you are prone to yeast infections take the probiotic while taking the antibiotic but try to keep them 3-4 hours apart. Why? The antibiotic will kill off the probiotic right away, almost like you didn’t take the probiotic at all (waste of time and money).

Too many companies are promoting products by how many billion are in their formula. The problem with that approach, 20 billion of garbage is not very effective. It’s about the quality, not the quantity!

Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotic ( Essential Formulas) The probiotic formula we have found to work the best for our patients is Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotic. It is a prebiotic (food for the good bacteria) and multi-strain probiotic that is grown for 3 years. Their nourishing prebiotic culture medium is fermented with live cultures comprised of EXCLUSIVELY pure spring water, fruits, wild vegetables, mushrooms, and seaweed. This carefully balanced and perfectly blended composition goes through a three-year fermentation process based on ancient Japanese traditions. Fermentation maximizes the natural health-promoting properties of each ingredient. The final result is an organic, living fusion that merges and encourages the evolution of your own exclusive internal bacteria. This, in turn, supports a healthy immune system and digestion of crucial micronutrients that your body needs to thrive and flourish.* Dr. Ohhira’s formula takes probiotic support to a whole new level by providing the biogenic ingredients Postbiotics needed to support your exclusive probiotic ‘fingerprint’. This allows the strongest formula to prevail for the most effective results.

It’s not about the billions of probiotic, it’s about the strongest and most effective. 100 billion of garbage in-effective probiotic is not going to solve your digestive problems!

By the way yogurt is either useless or worse it can be a contributing problem. Dairy creates mucus and yeast loves a mucus environment.

Monolaurin (Ecological Formulas) – is a medium chain fatty acid found naturally in coconut. It is highly effective at killing Candida albicans and does not kill "good" bacteria naturally found in your gut. According to one research study, Monolaurin is just as effective as natamycin (a powerful anti-fungal drug) in killing Candida albicans.

To completely be rid of a chronic yeast-fungal infection a comprehensive approach of dietary changes and potentially other natural anti-fungal supplements are needed for at least 3 months and sometimes more.

Remember over growth of yeast can wreak havoc with your health for years, but it doesn’t have too!
