If you want to prevent or treat a viral infection like colds, flu, shingles, herpes etc., then Olive Leaf Extract is a supplement you want to take.
Olive Leaf Extract has been clinically proven as an immune booster beneficial in the treatment of conditions caused by, or associated with, a virus, retrovirus, bacterium or protozoan. Studies have shown it to have a unique anti-viral mechanism. Oleuropein, the key nutrient, is most concentrated in the leaves than any other part of the plant. A Dutch researcher determined that the active ingredient in oleuropein is a substance called elenolic acid. In the late 1960s Upjohn, a major American pharmaceutical company, demonstrated that elenolic acid inhibited the growth of viruses. In fact, it stopped every virus that it was tested against.
Olive leaf’s broad killing power includes an ability to interfere with critical amino acid production for viruses. It also has an ability to contain viral infection and/or spread by inactivating viruses, by preventing virus shredding, budding or assembly at the cell membrane. Olive leaf extract can directly penetrate infected cells and stop viral replication.
According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer website “Olive leaf extract has been shown to be effective against the following microorganisms: E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis, T. rubrum and Candida albicans. Anti-HIV properties of Olive leaf extract include up-regulation of the expression of apoptosis inhibitor proteins as well as protein kinase signaling molecules Olive leaf extract promotes cell differentiation and induces DNA fragmentation leading to apoptosis in leukemia cell line.”
Research has also shown polyphenol compounds found in olive leaves have been shown to help directly prevent the formation of arterial plaques (and thereby reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke) in two ways. First, they reduce the production and activity of a series of “adhesion molecules. These substances cause white blood cells and platelets to stick to arterial walls, resulting in early plaque formation. Second, they reduce platelet aggregation (clumping) by multiple mechanisms, which reduces the risk that tiny clots will form at sites of plaque to produce a stroke or heart attack.
Other benefits of Olive leaf extract include protection for neurodegenerative diseases. Oxidative stress occurs more gradually in neurodegenerative diseases. However, the effects add up over a lifetime, producing inflammation and other changes that result in the accumulation of abnormal proteins that interfere with brain function and kill neurons. Olive leaf extracts help prevent these abnormal proteins from assembling into the neurofibrillary tangles seen in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s and similar diseases.
The Olive Leaf Extract we have used in our practice successfully for years with our patients is Olive Leaf Extract Phytosome (Natural Factors) 2 caps 2 x a day thru the Viral Season (keep 1 hour away from food).
