Chest Congestion - How to get rid of it!

Posted by Jane Jansen on

Chest congestion is an increase of mucus production in the esophagus, bronchial tubes and lungs. Often breathing is extremely uncomfortable and inhaling and exhaling is requiring more effort and sometimes the antibiotic the doctor has prescribed isn’t working because there is no bacterial infection, at least not yet.

Mucus formation is our body’s way of preventing foreign particles such as allergens, like dust or mold, as well as infectious bacteria, viruses or yeast from invading the lungs. It does this by getting them stuck in sticky surface.

However when the problem isn’t getting solved, a drastic increase in mucus production can get trapped in the respiratory system, which can lead to viral or bacterial pneumonia.

To rectify bronchial congestion it is imperative to eliminate dairy, soy or wheat products from the diet as they are mucus producing. This includes Boost or Ensure which are often prescribed by medical doctors and nutritionists. If you can, adding heat based spices to foods like soup or beverages can help get the mucus thinning and draining includes hot pepper, horse radish and ginger.

The essential oils Eucalyptus or Peppermint used either topically or inhaled helps to open up the airways.

Drinking teas like Breath Easy, or Herba Tussin and be soothing. An old home recipe called “Onion Honey Syrup” has been helping people for generations. Take 1 small yellow or white onion and chop up finely. Then add 1 tablespoon of raw honey mix up and let set over night, strain in the morning and take 1 tsp of mixture every 3 hours. (Not recommended for Diabetics).

There cough syrups Elderberry Olive Leaf (Woodstock Herbals) and Active Defense Syrup (Natural Factors) open up the airways, decrease mucus production and helps improve immune system function, take 1 tsp every 2-3 hours or as needed. To dry up congestion Clear Lungs (Ridge Crest Herbals) works really great 1- 2 caps 2-3 x a day.

The supplement Air Power ( Enzymatic Therapy) helps to thin mucus, making it easier to expectorate.

There are many Natural Antibiotics and Antivirals which are helpful and can be taken with these supplements.
