My Weekend Knee Injury & What I Did For It.

Posted by Jane Jansen on

I injured my left knee Sunday doing snow removal. Yes, it even happens to Naturopaths. I slipped on some ice and over extended the tissues in the outer front portion of the knee and boy did it hurt. Luckily my guardian angel was looking out for me and I avoided having to wait all day in an emergency room, as it was NFL Championship playoff day!

However my 1st mistake was after I got up and it felt OK, I continued snow removal for another hour still feeling good. My 2nd mistake was immediately sitting and watching the football game without taking precautionary steps to reduce inflammation and possible trauma. I just assumed the knee was still OK. Then at half time I went to get out of my recliner chair, my knee had become so stiff and swollen that walking was very painful and needed an old pair of crutches to get around.

Now 2 days later, thankfully I am much improved! (Which if I wasn't, I planned to see the doctor and get some tests)

What I did to help the healing process for my knee.

  1. Curcumin Phytosome Meriva 500mg (Jarrow Formulas) 2 caps 3x day. Curcumin is a natural pain reliever that decreases inflammation and pain.

  2. MSM (Methyl-sulfonyl-methane) (Natural Factors) 4,000 mg 3x day. MSM is a bio-sulfur that helps connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, muscle and fascia to repair and reduce stiffness.

  3. Arnica Gel (Boericke & Tafel) apply to knee 3x day. Arnica is a homeopathic remedy that signals the body to reduce swelling, bruising and pain.

  4. Extra Strength BlocPain roll-on (Lifetime Vitamins) & DMSO gel (DMSO Inc.) apply both to knee 1st block pain then DMSO morning and night. Blocpain is an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. DMSO in an anti-inflammatory that penetrates deep tissue and will act as a carrier to draw the Blocpain into deeper tissues.

  5. Icing the knee for 20 minutes in the morning and evening and if I can while at work. Also trying to get the leg raised as often as possible to reduce stress on the tissues, fluid retention and swelling.

Even I am amazed how much better my knee is today. However if my progress slows down or stops I will definitely make a visit to my doctor and see a good physical therapist. Hopefully I won’t need to.

Fortunately I was already taking 4,000 mg of MSM daily as well as 1,000 mg Curcumin for maintenance of my aging body (I will be 61 next week!) or I probably would have had a much more serious injury! I guess the old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
