Silicon provides important support for bone calcification, especially in the growth of new bone. The cells that make bone (osteoblasts) use silicon to help begin constructing a connective tissue matrix. Connective tissue is composed of cells which produce the fibrous protein matrixes of collagen and elastin, as well as the hydrated network of amino-sugars called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) or mucopolysaccarides (MPSs).
